Biography

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (12 July 1884 – 24 January 1920) was a painter and sculptor, who spent most of his short professional life in Paris. Born and raised in Italy, Modigliani suffered poor health throughout his life, including bouts of pleurisy, typhoid fever and tuberculosis, which would eventually claim his life. At age 14, sick with typhoid fever, Modigliani’s mother promised to take him when he was well enough to see paintings by the Italian Renaissance masters in Florence. Thereafter, Modigliani enrolled in art school, where he studied 19th-cenruty Italian art. After moving to Paris in 1906 Modigliani came into contact with Picasso and Brancusi, developing a personal style characterised by elongated faces that enjoyed little popular success while he was alive, but great popularity after his death.
