Biography
Demuth (8 November 1883 – 23 October 1935) was a watercolour and oil painter, who experimented with the cubist style. Born into a comfortable family of tobacco merchants, Demuth spent his entire life in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and lived from age 6 to the time of his death in his parental home. Much of his life was affected by poor health, which necessitated use of a cane from childhood, and resulted in his early death. Nevertheless, Demuth made a number of trips to Europe between 1907 and 1921, and frequently visited New York, where he encountered avant-garde styles and ideas, including Cubism.
