Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a founder of French Impressionist painting, with the term deriving from the title of his painting "Impression, soleil levant". This painting was included in the 1874 exhibition that Monet and his associates launched as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. He was also the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the philosophy of expressing perceptions before nature.
