Biography

Frederick Childe Hassam (October 17, 1859 – August 27, 1935) was an American Impressionist painter, noted for his urban and coastal scenes. Hassam left school aged 17 to help provide for his family after a devastating fire in Boston's commercial district wiped out his father's cutlery business. Starting out as an assistant in an accounting department, Hassam spent the next five years transitioning toward full-time work as an artist, studying privately and working variously as an engraver and free-lance illustrator. Following his first solo exhibition in 1883, Hassam was convinced by a friend to drop his first name, and thereafter was known as "Childe Hassam". He also began to add a crescent symbol in front of his signature, taking pleasure in stoking speculation of Middle Eastern descent. He remains a key figure in the 20th century American Impressionist movement, producing an extensive collection of oil and watercolour paintings, etchings and lithographs.
