Biography

Tarbell (26 April 1862 – 1 August 1938) was an American Impressionist painter. His father died serving in the American Civil War when Tarbell was aged 1. Following his mother’s remarriage, Tarbell was sent with his sister to be raised by his father’s family. He pursued an artistic vocation from an early age, taking evening art lessons as a child, serving an apprenticeship at a lithographic company from age 15 to 18, followed by a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Boston, and a term at the Academie Julian in Paris. On his return to Boston in 1886, Tarbell began his career as an illustrator, private art instructor, and portrait painter.
