Biography

Kandinsky (16 December 1866 – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter, who is credited as a pioneer of abstract art. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent most of his childhood in Odessa (Ukraine), returning to Moscow University to study law and economics. Offered a professorship in law, Kandinsky abandoned a promising academic career at age 30 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He returned to Moscow at the outbreak of World War 1, where he stayed until after the Russian Revolution. Feeling out-of-step with Soviet society, Kandinsky returned to Germany and taught at the Bauhaus until it was closed by the Nazis in 1933. He then moved to France, where he stayed for the remainder of his life, and produced much of the work for which he is best known today.
